Specialist Surgery at Your Regular Veterinary Clinic

Some pets can receive specialist surgical care without needing to transfer away from their regular veterinary clinic.

Through The Pet Specialists Mobile, one of our specialist surgeons can work alongside your veterinarian to provide selected consultations and surgical procedures within the familiar environment of your local clinic.

Your regular veterinarian remains central to your pet’s care. They understand your pet’s medical history, know your family and will continue to oversee their ongoing treatment and recovery.

Not every procedure is suitable for a mobile setting. When a patient requires advanced equipment, intensive monitoring or broader specialist support, we may recommend that treatment takes place at The Pet Specialists hospital in Terrey Hills.

Pet Surgery Services

Mobile Specialist Surgery

Our mobile surgical service brings selected orthopaedic and soft tissue procedures to your regular veterinary clinic, performed by a specialist surgeon from The Pet Specialists.

Whether mobile surgery is suitable will depend on your pet’s condition, the procedure being considered and the facilities required for anaesthesia, surgery and recovery.

Your regular veterinarian and The Pet Specialists surgeon will work together to determine the most appropriate setting for your pet.

Working With Your Regular Veterinarian

The process usually begins with your regular veterinarian examining your pet and discussing the available treatment options with you.

When specialist surgical input is required, your veterinarian can send your pet’s clinical history, diagnostic results and imaging to The Pet Specialists for review.

From there, we work directly with your clinic to plan the next steps. This may include a specialist consultation, further diagnostic testing or scheduling a procedure at either your regular clinic or The Pet Specialists hospital.

The aim is to provide the additional specialist support your pet needs while maintaining continuity with the veterinary team you already know and trust.

Specialist Consultation

A consultation with a specialist surgeon may be recommended before proceeding with treatment.

This provides an opportunity to:

  • Confirm the diagnosis and review treatment options
  • Discuss what the surgery involves and what to expect
  • Understand the recovery, aftercare and any risks
  • Ask any questions you have

During the consultation, the surgeon will assess your pet and review the information provided by your regular veterinarian.

Further testing may occasionally be recommended before a treatment plan can be confirmed. This will be discussed with you and your veterinarian so that decisions can be made together.

Depending on the case, the consultation may take place at your regular veterinary clinic or at The Pet Specialists’ hospital in Terrey Hills.

Phone Consultations

Where appropriate, a phone consultation with the specialist surgeon may also be arranged before the procedure.

This can give you an opportunity to discuss the proposed surgery, recovery period and any concerns you may have. Your regular veterinarian and The Pet Specialists can advise whether a phone consultation is appropriate for your pet’s case.

Small Animal Surgery Referral Process

Referral and Case Review

Your regular veterinarian will initially examine your pet, assess their condition and discuss their recommendations with you.

If specialist surgery is being considered, your veterinarian can refer the case to The Pet Specialists and provide the relevant clinical history, test results and diagnostic images.

A specialist surgeon will review the available information and work with your veterinarian to determine whether your pet can be treated through the mobile service or whether care at The Pet Specialists hospital in Terrey Hills would be more appropriate.

Planning the Procedure

A specialist consultation may be arranged if further examination or discussion is needed before proceeding.

Once a treatment plan has been agreed upon, The Pet Specialists and your veterinary clinic will coordinate the procedure. This includes confirming the date, surgical requirements, anaesthetic planning and arrangements for recovery and aftercare.

Your regular veterinary clinic will provide you with an estimate of the expected costs and will manage billing for procedures performed through the mobile service.

Before surgery, you will also receive a consent form outlining the proposed procedure, expected outcome and important potential risks. This must be reviewed and signed before the procedure can proceed.

Surgery and Follow-up Care

On the day of the procedure, the specialist surgeon from The Pet Specialists works alongside the veterinary and nursing team at your regular clinic.

Following surgery, you will receive an update and written instructions explaining your pet’s recovery and aftercare requirements.

Your regular veterinarian will continue to oversee your pet’s recovery. The specialist surgeon remains available to support your veterinary team, provide further advice and arrange a specialist follow-up when required.

This shared approach keeps your pet’s care connected from referral through to recovery.
