For The Referring Vet

The Pet Specialists Mobile surgical team performing an on-site procedure

Specialist Surgery, Delivered Within Your Practice

The Pet Specialists Mobile provides specialist surgical support within your own veterinary hospital for appropriately selected cases.

Our specialist surgeon works alongside your veterinary and nursing team, allowing your patient to receive specialist input while remaining under the care of the clinic they already know.

You remain the primary veterinarian and continue to oversee the patient’s broader care and postoperative recovery. We provide the specialist surgical expertise, equipment and support needed for the procedure.

Not every patient or procedure is suitable for a mobile setting. When advanced hospital facilities, multidisciplinary input or a higher level of postoperative monitoring is required, we can arrange for the patient to be seen at The Pet Specialists referral hospital in Terrey Hills.

Benefits for Your Practice

Extend the Care Available Within Your Clinic

Selected orthopaedic and soft tissue procedures can be performed within your own hospital without the need to invest in specialist surgical equipment, implants or additional surgical personnel.

The Pet Specialists provides the specialist surgeon, surgical nurse and the equipment required for the procedure. Your team provides the hospital environment, anaesthesia and perioperative patient care.

Maintain Continuity of Care

Your clinic stays central to the patient’s treatment. Clients receive specialist surgical care in a familiar environment, without their relationship with your team ever stepping aside.

Following surgery, the patient remains under your clinic’s care, with support from our surgeon available throughout recovery.

Collaborative Case Management

We work with you from the initial case review through to postoperative follow-up.

Clinical histories, diagnostic imaging and relevant results are reviewed before recommendations are made.

If further investigation or a specialist consultation is needed, we’ll talk it through with you directly so the next steps are planned together, not handed down. Our role is to add specialist input where it’s needed, alongside your knowledge of the patient and the relationship you’ve built with the client.

A Practical Option for Clients and Patients

For suitable cases, mobile surgery removes the need for clients to travel to a referral hospital and lets patients stay in a familiar setting. This can matter most for anxious patients, clients with limited transport, or families who’d simply prefer their pet’s care to stay coordinated through their regular clinic.

Support for Your Veterinary Team

Our visits provide an opportunity for direct discussion with the specialist surgeon before, during and after the procedure.

We’re available to talk through surgical decisions and give practical guidance on postoperative care.

The goal isn’t just to complete the procedure. It’s to help your team manage the case with confidence from referral through to follow-up

A Clear Billing Structure

The Pet Specialists invoices your clinic for the specialist surgical service.

Your practice continues to bill the client for the services it provides, including anaesthesia, medications, consumables, hospitalisation and postoperative care.

It’s a straightforward split that reflects the real work your veterinary and nursing team puts into every case.

How the Mobile Surgery Service Works

1. Send Us the Case Information

To discuss a potential mobile surgery, please send us the patient’s:

  • Signalment
  • Relevant clinical history
  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Recent bloodwork
  • Current medications
  • Any other information relevant to the proposed procedure

You can submit a referral through our online Vet Referral Form or by emailing mobile@tps.vet, whichever suits your workflow best.

You’re also welcome to call us on 02 9452 2933 to discuss the case before submitting.

2. Specialist Case Review

A specialist surgeon will review the information provided and discuss the case with you.

We will advise whether the proposed procedure appears suitable for the mobile service, whether further diagnostics are recommended or whether treatment at The Pet Specialists hospital would be more appropriate.

The initial case review and discussion are provided at no cost to your clinic or the client.

3. Specialist Consultation

A specialist consultation is generally recommended before surgery.

This allows the surgeon to examine the patient, confirm the diagnosis, discuss the available treatment options and ensure the client understands the proposed procedure, expected recovery and relevant risks.

Consultations can take place at your clinic or at The Pet Specialists hospital in Terrey Hills. A specialist consultation fee applies.

Where appropriate, a preoperative phone discussion with the owner can also be arranged at no additional charge.

4. Procedure Planning

Once the client has elected to proceed, The Pet Specialists will coordinate the procedure with your clinic.

We will confirm:

  • The proposed procedure
  • The date of surgery
  • The equipment and implants required
  • Anaesthetic and perioperative considerations
  • Preparation of the patient
  • Anticipated postoperative requirements

Our team will contact your clinic before the scheduled procedure to confirm the arrangements and provide an estimated arrival time.

5. Preparing the Patient

Your clinic is responsible for admitting and preparing the patient for surgery.

This generally includes:

  • Completing your hospital consent process
  • Obtaining the signed surgical consent form from The Pet Specialists
  • Premedication
  • Induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia
  • Clipping and preparing the surgical site
  • Perioperative medication
  • Anaesthetic monitoring
  • Postoperative hospital care

The exact requirements will be discussed with your team before the procedure.

6. The Surgical Procedure

The specialist surgeon and surgical nurse from The Pet Specialists will attend your clinic for the procedure.

We bring the specialist surgical equipment, implants and suture materials required for the planned surgery.

Your team remains responsible for general anaesthesia and patient monitoring. Our surgeon will perform the procedure and any agreed regional anaesthetic techniques, including local nerve blocks or epidural anaesthesia where appropriate.

The procedure is completed collaboratively, with both teams contributing to the patient’s care.

7. Surgical Handover and Reporting

Following the procedure, the specialist surgeon will update your veterinary team on:

  • The intraoperative findings
  • The procedure performed
  • The anticipated outcome
  • Postoperative medications
  • Activity restrictions and rehabilitation
  • Recommended rechecks
  • Any potential complications to monitor

We will also contact the owner to discuss the surgery and immediate aftercare.

Your clinic will receive a detailed written surgical report, including discharge and postoperative care instructions.

8. Postoperative Care

The patient remains under the care of your hospital following surgery.

Your team will oversee recovery, discharge, medication and routine postoperative rechecks. The specialist surgeon remains available to answer questions, review progress and provide further recommendations when required.

A specialist recheck can also be arranged where clinically appropriate.
